YOUNG JUDO CLUB SITTINGBOURNE

INVITATION SENIOR JUDO CHAMPIONSHIP

April 12th

The Young Judo Club based at the Swale Martial Arts Club East Street Sittingbourne held its annual Senior Championships on Saturday April 12th 2008. This year for the first time we invited Faversham Judo Club, Woodside Judo Club Bedford and Spitfire Judo Club Folkestone to participate. Sadly only one woman entered the competition that was Kerrie Penfold from Folkestone she was game enough to fight the men, at one time the YJC had one of the biggest and most successful women’s clubs in the country but like Judo as a whole women’s Judo is suffering a major down turn. Instructor Miles Brown is trying to stop this erosion and already on his Wednesday class he has 8 women attending notably his wife Elvie a past YJC champion some 25 years ago  is back in the fold

.

There were many exciting fights during the day, the converted veterans event was won by Miles Brown, the final for endurance was the Black Belt Open where Ashley Costa 3rd Dan v Danny Carrott 3rd Dan fought for 15 minutes as both new each other so well they were blocking every throw and ground work move but it was Danny who eventually won. Senior bouts are usually 5 minutes, Martin Clarke who was sitting in the spectators seats  commented rather loudly “In my day we had to fight for 20 minutes)”his son John responded by saying “Was that before or after Caesar put his thumb up”. The controversial fight of the day was with Ashley Costa and Carl Swindells, Ashley was worn out by the fight with Danny so Carl who realised he did not have Ashley skills went on to try power Ashley into submission. Ashley dropped under Carl with a sacrificial throw Carl went with the throw continuing the movement by throwing Ashley; the referee gave Carl the win. Ashley complained bitterly and some of the audience were with him, Martin tried to take the heat out of what should be friendly competition by asking the audience for a show of hands (a thing not normally done in judo) and Carl got the nod. For those who are interested the rules say if you are being thrown and check the throw and then check throw your opponent you get the score did Carl Check the Throw well you can soon have yours ay as this match will be featured on You Tube. There are now several sites on You Tube which follow ours clubs success and history they are You Tube IBFBCSA, You Tube Britishsombo, You Tube IBFUK.

Text Box: Canadian Matt came along to watch the competition he is a student of Robert Le Ruyet who visited us some years ago. Matt is serving with the Canadian Army in Afghanistan, when the audience heard this they all gave a round of applause and Martin Clarke seen here with Matt Nelson also reminded everyone that British Troops must never be forgotten
