Warriors lead the way at the 2007

British Open Sombo Championships

Warriors Grappling Academy and Young Judo Club both based at the Swale Martial Arts Club East Street Sittingbourne tope the medal table at the 2007 championships. The clubs took 6 British Titles, 2 silvers and 2 bronzes. Juniors Ashley Jordan and Kieran Allan both took gold in their respective weight, which was pleasing for Coach Martin Clarke who had been working with the two boys for 8 weeks, he saw a great improvement. It is a pity Martin has closed the Junior Sombo Class because of lack of interest and commitment from youngsters. Martin an old fashioned coach who expected youngsters to be committed does not fit the profile of a Politically Correct Coach in the words of one youngsters “ I did not like Mr Clarke’s Class he make you work to hard” enough said. Jamie Marzetti continues to take Gold a regular occurrence for him I any grappling sport now Swale Martial Arts Club has a British Judo Association section the “Sittingbourne Judo Society” we expect him to take medals there as well.

Latest find for the club is Dennis Kerr who has trained in  Judo as a Junior for many years in other clubs joined us last year entered his first Sombo comp and took gold in the under 68 kilo class, he gave a creditable performance and we expect more medals in the future. Ashley Costa was looking very sharp and has been short listed for the World Championships later this year, he reached the final of the U74 kilo class only to lose to Wesley Cousins in the dying seconds he was caught with a Fireman’s throw for 4pts. Now Ashley will have to fight Wesley again in the Scottish Open in July if he wins there will be a fight of in Folkestone. Danny Carrott moved up to u90kilo as John Clarke was injured and we would have had two fighters in the u82 kilo and none in the u90 kilo as Danny has already been selected for the u 82 kilo class it was the right thing to do. Although he found the category a lot harder as the opposition were heavy and bigger he still managed to gain a Gold medal.
