Dear Editor
You will find enclosed a report on the above championships issued by the international body the IKA you will see how may times our Sittingbourne club is mentioned not only proof of the quality of player the club train but also why Swale.B.C, Lottery, Swale Police and Kent Community Foundation have helped the club with grant aid in refurbishing and renewing the club facilities.
In several categories our youngsters came in the first 3, Best Junior Girl of the day award went Stacey Branchett, Best Junior Boy of the day went Sam Miller and the top award went to Young Judo Club instructor/SCC PE Master John Clarke gaining the Best Performance of the day.
Although all our players fought well the two outstanding performances of the day came form 20-year-old Danny Carrott who won two gold’s in his age/weight division and the Senior event. 32 year old john Clarke had the hardest fight of career when he met 19th (120 k) Danny Murphy who is a 5th Dan Judo, 3 times World Master’s Judo Champion medallist. Danny was one of the best heavyweights we have seen in the area since since John’s Father Martin last competed, performing some big throws. John weighed a mere 13 ½ stone (86 K) so it was a great achievement for John to win after having such a big handicap.
Both John and Danny are short listed to represent GB in the World Sombo Championships to be held in Bulgaria in November. Sombo is another form of Jacket Wrestling the club practises.
The Swale Martial Arts Club is going through a major refurbishment, it is having new mats, new floor special constructed for the Martial Arts, new showers, new pine walls, new Infrared sauna etc this project should be finished in the next 3 weeks and has been helped with grants from swale Borough Council, Swale Police and Lottery fund. The clubs next project is to create a small dojo in what was Clarkees Bar Function Hall this has been help with funds from the Kent Community Foundation, this added Dojo can help in the teaching of small groups be they elite or those with learning difficulties, we will also be able to expand by offering some more styles of Martial Arts. SMAC needs instructors to start clubs in Tai Chi, Aikido and Jiu Jitsu.
Anyone interested in what we do should telephone Hotline 0906 201 1403, email: Sombo@blueyonder.co.uk, www.sittingbourne.org.
