Summer Camp 2006 go to www.BUDO-IBF.co.uk for photo's Members of the Young Judo Club and Sittingbourne Judo Society took part in the 40th Annual Summer Budo Camp at Folkestone over the bank Holiday weekend. The camp was started by the late Nobby Clarke 6th Dan and has been carried on by his son Martin Clarke 8th Dan, since 1966 the camp has been held at St Mary’s Bay first at the Schools Journey Centre then at the ACF Camp. For many years the ACF camp had fallen into disrepair this led to falling numbers, the Army Cadet Force had a brand new weekend training camp built at Dibgate, St Martins Field, Folkestone. The Summer Budo Camp were the first to use this brand new facility, which could cater for 150 people, the venue was excellent.
5 instructors took the course they were Young Judo Club members Martin Clarke 8th Dan, John Clarke 4th Dan, Colin Carrott 3rd Dan, Greg Garside 3rd Dan and Faversham’s Trevor Davies 6th Dan. A lot of Martial Arts players attend this course to advance their grades this year was no exception.
YJC/SJS results Alex Costa 6th Kyu low green, Sheena Fathers 6th Kyu low green, Bob Wright 1st Kyu upper Brown, Jason Fathers upper Brown, Greg Garside 4th Dan. A special mention must go to Greg Garside who not only Coaches in Sittingbourne but runs a Young Judo Club in Bexley and Bromley, Greg has been taking his examination for over a year and the Summer Camp was the climax of that exam. 58 year old Greg opted for a double grading 1) Technical Grade 2) Teacher Grade. 4th Dan Judo is a very high grade; to reach this standard you have to perform 4 Kata’s (sequence of Judo movements done in pre determined way) have extensive knowledge of Judo throw and groundwork, plus be a qualified referee. The performance of these to the examiners standards will pass you to Technical 4th Dan, the ability to coach them qualifies you for Teachers grade. Greg performed both of these feats to come up with a Distinguish pass.
The course used to be divided into two weeks Junior and Senior as of next year there will be just one which will available for adults and young adults who are in Senior Schools i.e. 12 years and above. Special mention must go 48-year-old Dave Hatch who was one of the fittest on the course coming 3rd three time in the cross country run beating people over half his age.
As with most of these courses there is always a silly awards night and the YJC won most of these: Crufts Awrad for the best dressed Judoka – Dave Hatch Rembrandt Award for the Judoka who spent most time on the mat – Danny Carrott Jordan award for the biggest T>>> of the course – Jason Fathers German Fighter Pilot Award for the silly Focker of the week – Bob Wright Snow White award for feeling dopey - Sheena Fathers
