Scottish Open Sombo Championships

July 2009

Dumfries

This years event did not attract the numbers of previous years this was expected as the credit crunch is affecting everyone after saying that it did attract some top class Players and fighters from other styles. The lads from Carlisle who are MMA fighters looked quite impressive in their first competition in Sombo and hopefully we will see more of them. Sombo/Sambo does blend itself to other wrestling styles as it rules are not restrictive unlike say Judo where you have to have had to practise Judo for some considerable time before you can compete; Sombo has attracted all sorts of grappling disciplines.

Three members of the Sittingbourne Warriors Grappling Academy participated in this event, they were John Laver, Danny Carrott and Jamie Marzetti all three had a very good day. First out was 16 year Old Jamie Marzetti who was entered in the men’s u74 kilo class, he surprised everyone by taking Gold beating an experience Judo 3rd Dan on the way, Jamie a promising Judo Player has the tendency to rely on counters when in Judo Comps but in Sombo he really comes alive. Coach John Clarke believes the rules of Judo which now allows you score a maximum knockout throw very easily make Judoka hesitant in attacking as a small mistake can cost you the match, while the scoring in Sombo leaves you room to experiment making a much more interesting match.

The hardest category of the day was the over 90k class and with Danny and John both involved it was going to be an interesting event. After the prelims the top four were put in a round robin i.e. they all fought each other. First out were the two Sittingbourne Lads everyone thought this was going to be a fore gone conclusion, with Danny with all experienced was expected to win. John had a different idea, this was only his second Sombo event and at 105 kilo, very powerful and very fit he ended using his strength to win the match. This was a major upset, Danny went on to beat British Champion Johannes Alder and Scottish Champion Danny Roberts in turn Roberts and Alder beat John Laver. John lack of knowledge of the rules lost him the bout against Roberts, Danny Roberts had John in an arm lock position, to escape John gave an almighty shout, the rules state if in a submission position authorised by the referee any noise is considered a gesture of submission. So the final tally was Carrott and Alder had a win each because Danny had beaten Johannes he was given the Gold position.

The Warriors meet at the Swale Martial Arts Club and are looking for members; they have recently started a MMA Submission Wrestling club on a Thursday. The club is closed during August but will re-open in September for further details contact sombogb@blueyonder.co.uk or visit www.sittingbourne.org
