Scottish Open 2008
Young Judo Club & Warriors Grappling Academy Compete in Scottish Open Sombo and Judo Tournament 2008
Members of the two clubs travelled to the town of Dumfries in Scotland at the end of July, this is a regular trip every year. This event has been going for 10 years and attracts a diverse entry, with many Judoka and Samboist coming from all over Scotland, Northern England it always attracts a foreign entry this year we had people from the USA and Germany.
The competition started with the Judo and event where we normally win a few Gold medals, but this year we had to make do with just one with Ben Franks putting up a brilliant performance to win Gold in the Junior Boys section. Ashley Costa won silver in the Men’s lightweight in a final where he dominated his American opponent only to be caught in the last few seconds of the match with an Uchi Mata throw for Waza-ari 7pts, brothers Danny and Lee Carrott were split into the middle weight and heavyweight sections. Lee put up a good performance only to lose to the experienced Johannes Alder from Scotland, last year Brother Danny beat Johannes. Danny moved out of the middleweight section into the heavyweights where he was dwarfed in strength and size he lost to the same Scottish fighter twice Coach John Clarke tried to make him withdraw because of a wrist injure but he refused. Debbie Jackson our only female fighter won silver in her weight and silver in the Open where she had to fight a women from Newcastle who was a lot heavy and bigger. Coach John Clarke was pleased with the overall performance of the team.
The Warriors Grappling Academy are basically the grappling wing of the Young Judo club and they fared better in the Sombo Competition with Ashley Costa winning in superb style the lightweight section he also won a trophy for the best throw of the day, when he picked his opponent of the ground took him up to shoulder height to throw for a total victory, Ben Franks beat brother Tom Franks in the finals of the middle weight boys, with brothers Lee and Danny Carrott winning Silver.
Lee Carrott had a bet with Ben Franks that he would win better medals the forfeit was to have their heads shaved; Lee is now sporting a bald head.
Just a reminder that when the schools return in September Marcella Cullen will be starting a new Judo section on a Monday night for children this class will follow the School term and payment will be made on a term basis, the venue will be at the Swale Martial Arts Club Sittingbourne further information 01794 437124-youngjudoclub@yahoo.co.uk-www.youngjudoclub.co.uk
