Medals galore at YJC Junior
Championship
It was standing room only at the Young Judo Club Sittingbourne annual junior
club championship. Over two sessions, more than 150 people squeezed into the
upstairs Dojo at East Street Sports Centre. Competing for their
medals were children from all three YJC branches in Swale:
Sittingbourne, Milton and, making its debut, Bredgar.
YJC kicks off every year with a club championship for the under 16s.This is a
relaxed, low-pressure event, intended to give everyone, beginners as well as
experienced members, a taste of competition. The children then retuned in the
evening for the medal presentation and disco.
The number of entrants this year was the highest for several years, especially
in the 5-7 and 8-14 age groups. For many children, it was their first
championship, and it was encouraging to see how well they coped. Fourteen
children from Bredgar Young Judo Club - half of the membership in
this new branch, which opened only in September 2003 - competed, bagging one
gold, three silvers and several bronzes.
Young Judo Club meets on Tuesday in East Street Sports Centre, Sittingbourne,
Wednesday at Academy of Sport & Movement Milton Regis and Thursday at Bredgar
Village Hall.
