CREDIT CRUNCH JUDO & KARATE
Like most people and organisations the Swale Martial Arts Club is suffering from the credit crunch with members either leaving or in most cases just attending once a week and very few attending courses and competitions this was very apparent at the dismal turnout at the recent BJA Kent Open. Despite the efforts of the British Judo Association in introducing children to Judo in schools where one of their instructors goes into a school and runs a 6 week club to encourage them to take up Judo. This scheme has only seen one or two youngsters joining local Judo clubs maybe a voucher system where the BJA pay for one or two lessons in a local club would be a better use of resources. The Sittingbourne Judo Society/Young Judo Club are particularly interested in building their 5, 6 and 7 year old class up, this is run by Keith Costa on a Tuesday at 5.30 pm at the Swale Martial Arts Club East Street Sittingbourne any beginner bringing in this article with them gets a free lesson. To try and accommodate Adult we offer the Submission Wrestling free of charge on a Thursday if you attend either the Judo/Sambo Tuesday night training or the Wednesday night Judo . The MMA Submission Wrestling has been a disappointment with just a few of our regular members attending, for years I have been pestered to start this lesson when I did I had little or no response. It seems the people of Sittingbourne do not want tough hard contact sports anymore, already certain groups are doing Belt Examinations without any competing and some have suggested teaching Judo up to Black belt without anyone being thrown!!! Sorry but Judo is a tough, hard discipline Combat sport. Our Karate section which was first formed in 1962 is well down in members and we would like to see more young people trying this traditional Japanese Martial Art especially if you are over 11 years of age. Karate is on a Saturday morning at 10.45am at the Swale Martial Arts Centre
