3rd Generation Clarke takes over Senior Judo Section
Martin Clarke 8th Dan Technical advisor to Swale Martial Arts Club
has decide to let his 32 year old son John take over the senior section of the
Young Judo Club. The Young Judo Club was founded by John (Nobby) and Margret
Clarke in 1957 Martin took over the adult section when he was 20 years old in
1970, he is known as the BEAR in Martial Arts circles he is a very competitive
and aggressive player. His old fashioned methods of teaching, discipline,
determination and dedication have made him one of the most successful coaches in
the country but in recent years society no longer wants this type of teaching
plus the Politically Correct brigade would have a heart attack if they attended
one of his training sessions, for Martin is not frightened to say what he
thinks. Recently a young man was training with Martin, he in his normal way was
shouting advice, and the lad would not listen until a trainer came sailing
through the air to hit him on the back. The lad was some what dejected (who can
blame him) until Martin pulled him to one side and told him "that the
reason he shouts was not because he dislikes him on the contrary it was the
opposite" this spurred the lad on to win his next tournament. The main
reason for him handing over is the fact is that he is a hands on Judoka, once
again an old fashioned concept of if you are wearing a Judogi you should be
prepared to fight with anyone who walks on the mat. His old injury to hip and
knee now makes it impossible for him to do this as he says, " he does not
want be one of those instructors who stands on the side of the mat talking a
good fight"
John Clarke already has a formidable record as a Judoka being a 4th
Dan and winner of literately hundreds medals in Judo, Sombo Wrestling, Belt
Wrestling, Kurash and Olympic style Wrestling John works in the PE department at
Sittingbourne Community College will bring to the position youth with experience
and a more modern approach to Judo.
Martin the Bear is not retiring he will still be on the SMAC committee as
Technical advisor and will be starting new classes in Sport CombatSombo, he will
also return to one of his other passions Politics helping to rejuvenate Roman
Ward.
The Hard Man of Judo got results let hope a gentler way with son John can do
the same.
