BJA KENT JUDO CHAMPIONSHIPS & TRIALS

DARTFORD KENT

On the Saturday Morning 12 year old Ben Franks attended the BJA Kent Championships, this was the first time in many years that a junior from the Young Judo Club has entered an event run by this organisation, certain changes in the BJA codes of practise have satisfied YJC coaching staff that their events should be supported. Green Belt Ben won Silver only losing to a Brown belt from the highly rated Tonbridge Judo Club he won his two other fights with Ippon, although a very disappointing turn out the competition was of a reasonable standard and hopefully more YJC members will support it in the future. Ben has a lot of talent but at 12 should no put all his eggs in one basket i.e. Judo he should enjoy his Judo along with other past times and if he still doing the sport at 16/17 then he, his parents and his coaches can evaluate what commitment he should give and what his prospects can be. The Olympics are a wonderful thing to achieve but in Judo an Olympic Gold or a World Gold does not put bread on the table. I have lost count on the amount of times I have seen an article in a newspaper where a proud parents say their offspring is an Olympic potential and a few years later they are not even doing the sport, at last Olympics only ½ a dozen were selected GB Judo Team.
